At Deborah Simpkins, D.M.D., we strongly believe that preventative dentistry is the easiest way to achieve a healthy, breathtaking smile. Preventing problems before they ever occur is much simpler than stopping or correcting problems after they begin to develop — and in most cases, it is remarkably easy to take care of your smile!
Below are three easy ways to protect your smile from damage, decay, and everyday danger:
1. Drink Lots and Lots of Water!
Everyone knows our bodies need water to function, yet hardly anyone regularly drinks enough of it! In addition to the many health benefits water provides, water is also the key to maintaining a healthy smile. Most American tap water contains fluoride, which strengthens the enamel in our teeth and helps prevent tooth decay. Water also helps wash away harmful bacteria in our mouths and can help clean our teeth after eating.
2. Use Teeth Only for Eating
Our teeth are strong, sharp, and useful for chewing, but to protect our smiles, we must limit their use. Far too often, our teeth become our go-to resource for so many things that have nothing to do with eating: ripping tags off of clothing, opening lids, chewing on pens, biting hangnails, etc. Teeth are not meant to be all-purpose tools, and if we treat them as such, we run a serious risk of damaging them. When in doubt, use your teeth only to chew food!
3. Don’t Skip the Flossing
Flossing is one of the cheapest, fastest ways to care for our smiles. Daily flossing makes a huge difference in our overall dental care, and it takes only minutes to do. Despite this, so many dental patients report they rarely or never floss. Flossing helps remove food and bacteria that becomes trapped between teeth and in hard-to-reach places within the mouth. To protect your teeth and keep your smile sparkling, spend just two minutes each day flossing.
