Dental Implants

Dental implants are a type of tooth replacement that is commonly used to replace one or more teeth.

Woman Smiling | Dental Implants Sarasota FLThe part that we refer to as an implant is a small titanium post placed into the bone of the jaw that acts as a replacement root for a missing tooth. Over time, the post fuses with surrounding bone through the process of osseointegration. We then restore the part of the tooth you can see with a crown, bridge, or denture, depending on your specific needs.

Why are dental implants so special?

Dental implants have several benefits, making them a highly desirable option for patients who are interested in a permanent tooth replacement solution. The titanium implant is biocompatible, meaning that it is easily accepted by the body and will not deteriorate over time.

However, the long-term success of your implant relies on the health of your gums and jaw bone, so it’s essential to continue to follow proper oral hygiene and stay current with routine dental visits to our Sarasota, FL dental office. While dental implants require a bigger up-front investment, they can last much longer than solutions like a dental bridge, making them an excellent choice for your long-term health!

Digital X-Rays

Your safety is one of our priorities, so we never take unnecessary x-rays. However, the radiation to which you’re exposed with a set of four bitewing x-rays is about equivalent to that of a short flight.

Couple Riding Bikes | Dentist Sarasota FLEven so, technology has kept up with the demand for lower dose radiation. Now we use safe, efficient, digital x-rays that reduce your exposure even further – some estimates say by as much as 80%.

Digital X-Rays at our Siesta Key, FL dental office

Instead of film, digital x-rays use flat sensors. The sensors are more comfortable than film and also require less radiation to produce a high-resolution image. Of course, we still use a lead apron to provide our patients with the most protection possible.

Digital x-rays also have other benefits. We can project the images on your chairside monitor to share them with you and pinpoint problem areas. When you can see what the problem is in detail, you will be better able to understand the need for treatment.

The frequency of x-rays at our Sarasota, FL dental office varies greatly from patient to patient. Those with a history of dental conditions will need x-rays more frequently than those who don’t.

If you are concerned about the safety of dental x-rays, please call us, and we will be happy to talk to you about your specific needs and establish a plan for treatment.

Periodontal Treatment

gum treatments sarasota flSeeing blood in your sink after you brush or floss your teeth can be distressing, and might be a sign that you need to visit your dentist in Sarasota, FL.

How Should Healthy Gums Look?

Take a look at your teeth next time you brush. Your gums should be a healthy shade of pinknot red or swollen. If you notice that your gums look raw and almost bloody, this could be a sign of periodontal disease. Another sign to pay attention to is how the gums hug the teeth; they should form a tight semi-circle around your tooth. Loose gums can be pockets for bacteria and food debris, which can lead to tooth decay if not cleaned properly.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal or gum disease occurs when plaque builds up around your teeth. If built-up plaque is not adequately cleaned; people often develop symptoms like bleeding, red or swollen gums, and bad breath. Over time, if left untreated, the gums can pull away from your teeth, allowing bacteria to live in your tissues.

How Do I Treat Periodontal Disease?

If you think you are suffering from gum disease, you are not alone. Many people get periodontal disease treatment, which can be as easy as making an appointment with your Sarasota, FL dental office. During your bi-annual dental cleaning with Deborah Simpkins, DMD, Dr. Simpkins will make an oral examination for gum disease. These dental visits are vital in protecting your oral health. If gum disease is detected, Dr. Simpkins will advise you of your dental cleaning options to maintain good oral health.

Porcelain Veneers

If you are interested in improving and beautifying your smile, porcelain veneers are a popular and versatile cosmetic dentistry option in Sarasota, FL. There are many benefits to dental veneers, especially when it comes to protecting your tooth and making your smile as beautiful as possible. Woman | Veneers in Sarasota

What Are Dental Veneers?

Tooth veneers are a translucent, tooth-colored dental prosthetic that covers the front surface of the tooth. The material mimics the look and function of natural teeth, and Dr. Simpkins can fabricate it so that it blends in naturally and is undetectable. Because the dental veneers are permanent, Dr. Simpkins will go over the benefits and cons of the dental procedure; patient education is essential to us, and we want patients to be able to make informed decisions regarding their oral health.

What Smile Flaws Do Tooth Veneers Fix in 34231?

Dental veneers can address a number of smile flaws, including:

  • Short or abnormally shaped teeth
  • Enamel erosion or wear-and-tear
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Severely stained or yellowed teeth due to illness, injury, or excessive tobacco use
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Minor alignment issues

Some Sarasota patients get dental veneers to fix one tooth, while others opt for six to eight veneers for a beautiful and symmetrical smile. Tooth veneers are low-maintenance and stain-resistant, and with proper care and maintenance can last ten to 20 years, which makes them a smart investment in your oral health and appearance.

Are You Interested in Designing Your Smile?

If you have wanted a natural-looking smile that reflects the smile you deserve, contact Deborah Simpkins DMD to schedule a porcelain veneer appointment. We are here to answer any questions or go over your smile makeover alternatives.

Preventive Dentistry

Even though as adults we’ve brushed our teeth thousands of time without a second thought; many of us that aren’t using proper brushing techniques. While maintaining bi-annual dental cleanings is important for your oral health; your at-home dental care is incredibly vital.

Time Matters!

Many people who brush forget that the length of time spent cleaning your teeth and gums matters. Some of us might even be surprised at how woefully short our brush sessions actually are. Many dentists recommend getting an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer.

Brush Twice Daily

The minimum amount of times we should brush is twice daily, with flossing once a day. The best way to remember is to brush in the morning, and right before bed in the evening. This type of oral maintenance helps keep your teeth and gums healthy between dental visits.

Keep Your Toothbrush Clean!

Many people forget to replace their toothbrush to make sure the dental device properly cleans your teeth. A new soft-bristled toothbrush every three months should be perfect for keeping your pearly whites beautiful.

dental equipment | sarasota fl dentistIf you typically take good care of your teeth and rarely have dental problems, you may be wondering why regular dental check-ups are necessary. After all, wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to only visit the dentist when something is wrong?

While it may seem counterintuitive to spend time and money at the dentist’s office when you are feeling healthy, regular dental appointments are actually the key to preventative dentistry. When you visit our Sarasota, FL general dentistry office, our skilled team thoroughly examines your mouth.

What happens during a preventative appointment at our Sarasota dental office?

Regular dental appointments are not just about cleaning your teeth. During these visits to our office, Dr. Simpkins and our hygienists are also checking your mouth for signs of periodontal disease, infection, and loose teeth. Additionally, our team performs an oral cancer screening while you are in the dental chair.

Because dental problems often start early and gradually worsen over time, you may not become symptomatic until the condition has significantly progressed. By visiting the dentist regularly, which generally means about every six months, you drastically improve your chances of catching serious dental conditions in their early stages.

When a patient decides to go with professional whitening, Dr. Simpkins will work to help them achieve their goals while staying within their budget. We offer two options for teeth whitening; custom trays and one-time-use trays.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

dental fillings | preventative dentist sarasota flAfter years of improvements to dental technology, we are now able to fix cavities with a tooth-colored material known as composite dental resin. This material is a combination of composites of glass and plastic resin, which is easy to mold and looks similar to dental enamel. When Dr. Simpkins places a tooth-colored filling she adds it in layers, which allows her to be very precise.

Other benefits of composite fillings

Aside from the cosmetic benefits that composite fillings offer, they are also less invasive than a traditional metal filling. In order to bond metal fillings more of the natural tooth structure needs to be removed. With composite fillings, Dr. Simpkins can remove less of the natural tooth and still achieve a strong bond.

The best time to treat dental decay is when it is first detected and still small. If you have a toothache or have some fillings you have been putting off we invite you to contact our Sarasota office!
